You'll see us price rekeying per cylinder, so here's what that actually means — no locksmith lingo. The cylinder is the part your key slides into. Rekeying re-pins that part, so we count how many there are.
Simple rule: wherever a key goes in, that's a cylinder.
1 cylinder = 1 rekey
Key on the outside, a little thumb-turn you twist by hand on the inside. This is what's on almost every home's front and back doors. One keyhole, one cylinder.
2 cylinders = 2 rekeys
Takes a key on both sides — no thumb-turn. Because there are two keyholes, there are two cylinders to re-pin, so it counts as two. You'll see these on gates, doors with glass nearby, and offices.
We usually don't recommend a double-cylinder lock on your main front door. In a fire or emergency, you don't want to be hunting for a key just to get out — a thumb-turn lets you leave instantly. They make more sense on gates, glass-panel doors, and offices. If you're not sure what's right for your home, just ask — we'll tell you straight.

The more cylinders you rekey in one visit, the better the value. You always hear the full total before any work starts.
The brand doesn't change the price — Kwikset, Schlage, and other standard locks all rekey at the same rate. The only exception is high-security locks like Medeco or Mul-T-Lock, which cost a bit more because their pins and keys are more expensive.
